Hair Extension Maintenance 101

I know what you're thinking-- hair extensions are probably SO high maintenance.

I say, it depends. Are you the kind of person who comes in every 6 weeks for color? If so, you can coordinate your extensions appointments with those! If you get your haircut once a year, yes they're more maintenance than you're used to.

Here I'm going to go over some frequently asked questions so you can get a better sense if hair extension maintenance is for you.

How much is this going to cost?

There are so many factors. If you want extensions for thickness only, it could be only $300, including the hair and installation. If you want it for length and thickness, it could cost $400-$1000 for the hair alone. Then the install fee, which ranges from salon to salon. Install fees at Haven Salon Healing in Scottsdale AZ range from $295-$475. I heard a quote from a client from another salon that was $2900 for hair and install!

Do I need to get them freshened up?

Yes, we call this a "move-up" and it's every 4-8 weeks, depending how fast your hair grows and your tolerance level when they grow out.

Do I have to buy new hair each time?

Nope! The hair brands I use last 6-10 months on average. You'll get multiple move-ups before you need to replace the hair.

How much are move-ups?

$175-$275, depending. Other salons charge upwards of $500

Why are your prices cheaper than others in Scottsdale?

I want to make extensions affordable to the general public, not just reserved for a select few.

How long does it take to get them put in?

2-2.5 hours typically. On rare occasions, 3+ hours. This would be better determined at consultation.

How long do move-ups take?

Anywhere between 45 minutes and 2 hours.

Do I need a consultation before booking?

Yes. We go over how much hair you will need, color matching, potential coloring we must do before installing the extensions, desired length, pricing and maintenance.

How long are they?

We have access to 18, 22 and 24 inch long extensions.

What do I have to do to take care of them?

Brush them every day with an extension brush (comes included in your service). Wash your hair as infrequently as you can and use dry shampoo in between washes. Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioners. Use leave-in conditioners and oils to keep them soft. Be gentle with them. Always dry the hair where the extension is attached. Limit your exposure to chlorine and salt water.

Can I color them?

It's recommended to have them professionally colored. Using permanent color or box color can damage them.

Can I perm them?

Absolutely not. If necessary, there are wavy and curly extensions available to better match your natural hair texture.

Will they damage my hair?

I've never personally seen beaded or weft extensions damage the hair. They use no sticky adhesives and they are very gently, but durably attached to your natural hair.

Now that you know answers to general questions, we would be happy to answer any additional ones you may have.
